{"id":1608,"date":"2024-11-05T22:31:17","date_gmt":"2024-11-06T06:31:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.oregonjournalismlab.org\/Election24\/?p=1608"},"modified":"2024-11-11T14:52:36","modified_gmt":"2024-11-11T22:52:36","slug":"watching-the-count","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.oregonjournalismlab.org\/Election24\/2024\/11\/05\/watching-the-count\/","title":{"rendered":"Watching the count"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-accent-3-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-9ccf8c63d8cc33b75864b3531a839bcd\">Election Day <strong>8:00 p.m.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>The Oregon polls closed at 8 p.m. PST Tuesday night <a href=\"https:\/\/www.verifythis.com\/article\/news\/verify\/elections-verify\/if-you-are-in-line-before-polls-close-you-can-vote\/536-1a8ce18a-bad9-46ac-9992-9e79c26e1080\">with people still lined up<\/a> to drop off their ballots or vote in person at the Lane County Elections Office. The voting process doesn\u2019t end there. Just behind the doors, a flurry of action took place to ensure all votes were counted and voting Oregonians had their voice heard.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When a ballot gets dropped off, it goes through a stringent process of sorting, signature review, deconstruction, reconciliation and finally adjudication. Observers nominated by both parties are allowed to observe the vote count process, separated from all workers validating Oregon\u2019s mail-in ballots.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ron has been an election observer for the Democratic party for 10 years worth of elections.&nbsp; He said this was the busiest night he\u2019s seen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He observes the voting process because he believes it \u201ccompletes the loop\u201d of understanding how the voting process works. Ron is a part of the election integrity caucus and believes that security measures in the voting process are very important.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ron stayed away from the national results to focus on the Oregon ballot count.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>John, a Republican and Oregon native who originally came to help with the vote count, sat in the deconstruction room intently watching as workers tamped ballots against the tables. He was feeling optimistic about the national results, although he was concerned about the validity of the election results. \u201cI have a strange feeling something bad is happening,\u201d he said. \u201cThe [2020] election was absolutely rigged.\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.snopes.com\/collections\/no-systematic-voter-fraud-2020\/\">[There is no evidence of systematic voter fraud in the 2020 election.<\/a>]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a property manager in Lane County, he believes that renters&#8217; votes should count less than property owners. \u201cIf I could wave a magic wand and go back to a time when you owned property to vote, I would.\u201d\u00a0<br>To him, the three most important issues this election are inflation, border protection and protecting property. \u201cThis land is our home,\u201d he said.
