{"id":1666,"date":"2024-11-08T13:44:51","date_gmt":"2024-11-08T21:44:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.oregonjournalismlab.org\/Election24\/?p=1666"},"modified":"2024-11-08T13:58:37","modified_gmt":"2024-11-08T21:58:37","slug":"sparks-anxiety","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.oregonjournalismlab.org\/Election24\/2024\/11\/08\/sparks-anxiety\/","title":{"rendered":"Locals Reflect on Presidential Election, Sparks Anxiety"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"has-text-align-right wp-block-post-author-name\">Jess Coronado Anna Field and Peiyu Li<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-accent-3-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-c6fcc5a5a010e99ab03afcb01d0c311c\">Election Day <strong>2:00 p.m.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vincent Moore was unchaining his bike in front of Market of Choice on Franklin Boulevard when he expressed his support for presidential candidate Kamala Harris.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think Kamala Harris is a fine candidate,\u201d Moore said. \u201cIf she gets elected, I am happy with that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moore described having feelings of anxiety over what would happen for both possibilities of the election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere is a lot of fear about what happens if Trump is elected. Even if Trump loses, it\u2019s likely he will contest it, and then that\u2019s going to trigger a multi-month process of lawsuits. The worst case scenario is a civil war,\u201d Moore said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Madison, a Starbucks barista, echoed those feelings of nervousness. She said, \u201cIt\u2019s a big turning point for our country. There are a lot of major decisions to come, and I can\u2019t really see where it\u2019s going to go until that decision is made.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most important issues to Madison is women\u2019s rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Talking about the concerns of a middle-aged man, Mark Rich, walking on Franklin Boulevard, said, \u201cWomen\u2019s rights and cost of living are very important. Economically, we\u2019re at a crossroads. Homes are too expensive now, and we have to do something to solve that problem and to build homes that are affordable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is probably the most consequential election in the history of our country,\u201d Rich expressed his concerns about current events. \u201cI think there\u2019s going to be a lot of rioting and a lot of negativity and a lot of violence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To deal with anxiety from the possible rioting, Rich tries to meditate and give himself some time. \u201cI don\u2019t do anything about it,\u201d Moore said. \u201cI just steep myself in it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In dealing with election anxiety, Madison is relying on her support system. \u201cI guess I texted my mom a little bit earlier and let her know I&#8217;m a little nervous about today. I&#8217;m a little on edge.
